Intuition Part II – Understanding Contraction & Expansion

So as is with life, you plant a seed and watch it flower. You open up a topic and you start to receive feed back from the universe in a variety of ways. In my last blog I spoke about using the tool of feeling into the body to determine what your intuition/higher knowing says about a certain topic. Observing whether your body contracts or expands in relation to a question, expansion being the yes intuitive cue and contraction being the no intuitive cue.  Since posting about this topic a conversation has been ignited between me, the universe and people surrounding me about how much fear interferes with the no answer, due to the fact that fear contracts the body.

I almost included this distinction in my first piece but chose to leave it out to keep the piece shorter. This is obviously an important factor that can often discredit the contraction and expansion tool for intuition, so here I will add some thoughts from my experience.

When doing this exercise I always take into consideration my conditioning and past trauma as they are the main culprits that can interfere with intuition. So for example when I was 16 I found myself in a threatening situation, the perpetrator could be described in height, weight, hair, eye colour, voice tone, ect. Luckily nothing too serious happened but I was traumatized enough that this person left a negative imprint in me which created a type of warning signal in my being. This is the sort of thing that is in the same family as PTSD but on a much smaller scale. So a couple years ago I met someone who looked similar to the person who traumatized me, due to the negative imprint left in my energetic field, my body contracted when I shook hands with this new person. Not only did my body contract but my intuition was alarming a bell loud enough to distract me from the present moment.  I began to experience the normal symptoms of the stress response, sweaty palms, increased heart rate, slight increase in breathing and lack of focus eg.

For the first few minutes I really believed that my intuition was speaking to me. I thought to myself this must be someone with dark motives, someone hiding something, someone that could be a threat to me ect. All the normal reasons my intuition would start sounding bells.

This person that I had just met might have been the nicest person on earth but due to the negative imprint left in my energetic field from a previous experience my intuition was tricking me into believing there was a real danger. We unconsciously discriminate on many levels all the time due to past negative experiences. We attempt to do something specific and fail, negative imprint, we have a bad relationship negative imprint, we have a disrespectful boss, negative imprint, all weaving imprints into our being and affecting the reliability of our intuition. These negative imprints generate a lot of subconscious fears as they gather detailed information about the people, places and scenarios that caused us pain. These are then incorporated into our energetic field at a subconscious level and guide us to prevent further pain by sending us feelings and intuitive hits when we encounter a similar energetic imprint.

With this understanding sometimes we are tricked into believing that what we are feeling as an intuitive ’no’, is in fact simply fear, something created from a past negative experiences. So knowing how to navigate through this is important. One of the ways to do this is to stay aware and question if what you are feeling is genuinely intuition or fear. If not we are simply ‘blinded by fear’. The left brain compliments the right brain very well in this sense and can provide clarity.

This also applies to fear of the unknown, fear that is more excitement based. The fear associated with taking a healthy risk or the fear associated with a challenge. All of these nervous sensations can be differentiated from the intuitive contracting we sense when our soul is speaking to us.

Our body contracting is a way of saying something negative might happen based on higher knowledge but also based on life experience. Sometimes we are meant to move forwards despite the fear, so this is when balancing logic and intuition are key. The logical mind is a good worker, if we can ask it the right questions, it will begin to investigate from a rational perspective for the possible reasons behind our intuitive sensations to eliminate any traces of trickery. After questioning my intuition in the above situation as to whether this person in front of me was really a danger or not, it took about 5 mins for my brain to bring forth the memories that created the negative imprint that led to the tricked intuitive hit.

Secondly, if you are tuning into your body for an answer, do it from a place of being grounded and connected. Take the time to centre yourself, connect with spirit, that peaceful sensation of becoming one with all that is and from there ask the question and pay attention to the sensations that arise but also the thoughts that arise along side it. If your body contracts but your mind is at ease you’re most likely dipping into intuition. If your mind is agitated simultaneously you might be creating the contraction through fear. Thoughts produce a response in the body so its important to quiet the mind so it can’t interfere with the ‘knowing’ coming through.

Thirdly, when you get used to the difference between fear sensations and intuition it will become easier. I had to pay some money to understand this, it came in the form of a financial mistake, I was on the fence and I requested confirmation from my intuition, I will never forget that distinction between fear and intuition again. Fear will create fluctuating contractions, it won’t be a solid contraction and I’ll feel it more in my stomach than the rest of my body because that’s where my fear shows up. When your intuition speaks to you and you’ve finally tested and understood it’s energetic quality you will notice the difference between fear and intuition. For me the fear contraction feels more like a nervousness, a fire energy, where as the intuitive contraction feels more earthy and all encompassing, a gentler knowing.

Forth, you need to be precise with your questioning. If your intentions are unclear, your intuition will be too foggy. The way in which we formulate the question will determine how precise and pointed the response will be. I found this to be so important with tarot readings for example. Usually people will ask me vague questions about their love life or business, when they do so the cards aren’t as aligned and hold no specific theme. The more refined the question the more refined the answer.

I’d love to hear feed back on how others experience their intuition. It’s not so easy to notice details unless we send out the intention to start having them shown to us so we can refine the process. Also training yourself to release stress from your every day will help to bring your nervous system back down to zero point so that your intuition is a lot cleaner and less influenced by accumulated stress factors including the opinions and expectations of others.

One Love,

J
